“We are trying to change systems here, not just people, so it takes committed consistency,” says Keisha Mabry, who is an author, speaker, and social entrepreneur. Microaggressions are verbal or nonverbal indignities which communicate derogatory, negative, or hostile messages to a marginalized group of people. Mabry says microaggressions may be unintentional because they are often based on a personal experience which is then applied to an entire group of people. Mabry recommends adopting a seek to understand mindset for both the person committing the microaggression and the person who receives it. Each person needs to understand the other’s point of view and educate himself or herself to prevent further incidents.
