The local chapter of PFLAG, an LGBTQ+ advocacy and support organization, has hired its first staff member.
Melisabeth Johnston has been appointed as program and communication director for PFLAG Springfield/SWMO, according to a news release. She starts Oct. 9, said Aaron Schekorra, board president for the chapter.
"We’ve been completely board-led until now," Schekorra said via email. "She is essentially going to be leading the day-to-day operations of the organization."
The addition of an executive director role may be considered in the future, Schekorra added.
Johnston joins PFLAG Springfield/SWMO from Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland, where she's worked the past eight years as resource development manager, according to her LinkedIn profile.
"Her expertise in communication will also play a pivotal role in enhancing the organization's outreach efforts and raising awareness of the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community," officials said in the release.
