The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded a $100,000 grant to Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar.
The funding from the department’s Health Resources and Services Administration is earmarked to train the health care system's emergency medical services staff to become certified community paramedics, according to a news release.
"Community paramedics care for patients at home or in other nonurgent settings outside of a hospital under the supervision of a physician or advanced practice provider," CMH officials said in the release. "Community paramedics can expand the reach of primary care and public health services by using EMS personnel to perform patient assessments."
HRSA grants place a focus, in part, on improving health care in rural areas.
Federal funding also is a part of the financing piece for $77 million in planned expansions at CMH, according to past reporting.
