Don’t Overlook Construction Career

Posted online
In recent years, the construction industry, along with the other trade professions, has seen a sharp decline in people choosing it as a career. The push to obtain a college degree has left a dearth of people who are willing and able to work in the trades. But Donnie Volentine of Larry Snyder and Company (LSC) says the construction industry shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes time to consider one’s career path.

“There are many profitable careers to be had in the trades, especially in construction management,” says Volentine. “And every job in construction is a new adventure, whether you’re working in management or on site with a general contractor.”

Volentine highlighted some of the perks that come with a career at LSC. Some of the usuals are a 401(k) plan, health insurance, paid vacations, and in some cases bonuses and a company vehicle. He stressed that there is a company focus on avoiding burnout and that employees are encouraged to take vacation time in order to unplug. For the same reason, there are boundaries set so work doesn’t extend beyond work hours and begin to encroach on family or personal time.

Employee roles are clearly defined from the outset of joining LSC. This way, everyone knows where they fit into the big picture at the company. Employee retention is good at LSC, with many staff having tenure of more than ten years.

LSC boasts a diverse portfolio that includes hospitality, office and retail, multi-family, industrial/warehouse, education and health care construction. Recent key projects include the expansion of the O’Reilly corporate office headquarters, Birch Point Nursing Home, Russell Cellular’s new corporate headquarter building and BigShots Golf’s Springfield franchise location.

Volentine has been with LSC for 15 of the company’s 40 years. “LSC is a great place to work because the company truly cares about the development and growth of the employee,” he says. “I’ve experienced this firsthand. There is a culture of trust and engagement between management and employees which makes work enjoyable each and every day.”
