Jeanette Cowherd, superintendent of the Park Hill School District in the Kansas City metro area, is resigning.
Cowherd had vowed to fight racism at the district, which has faced a tumultuous school year, according to the Kansas City Star. Recently, Park Hill South students circulated a petition supporting the return of slavery.
Cowherd has said that after years of working to improve “culturally relevant education, access and inclusion,” the incident has “made it clear that we must speed up our efforts.”
She asked the school board not to extend her contract that expires June 30.
