The foundation of the Mercy culture has been intentional from the very beginning when founder Sister Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy started the ministry in Dublin, Ireland in 1827.  Through prayer, service, study, and sharing the legacy of Jesus, Catherine and the Sisters of Mercy served the poor, sick and uneducated in their local communities. Today, Mercy co-workers carry on that culture and sustain the healing ministry through the practice of Formation, which fosters a deeper understanding of the call and commitment to serve in a faith-based healing ministry. 

Mercy is a faith-based, not-for-profit health care ministry, in which co-workers help shape the culture through their talent, expertise and commitment to excellence. “We are intentional in our efforts to hire the best and invest in our co-workers so they can reach their full potential, and in turn, give their best to those they serve,” says Starks.“We believe in supporting our co-workers at work and home.”

A few examples of those services and opportunities include:

MSU Care—Mercy partners with Missouri State University to offer a free community clinic to uninsured individuals between the ages of 18 and 64 who fall below 150% of the federal poverty level. This provides access to primary health care and free prescription medications. The clinic also serves as a training ground for MSU health sciences students.
Co-worker crisis fund—supports co-workers experiencing financial strain related to personal crises or challenges. Last year over $160,000 was provided to support co-workers.
Co-worker food pantry—resource for co-workers who face food insecurities for any reason, no questions asked.
Health insurance and day care discounts—available to eligible co-workers meeting income guidelines and criteria.
Community involvement—Mercy co-workers have many opportunities to partner with community organizations through volunteering, board participation, sponsorships, and donations.

“We often hear ‘something feels different about this place’ when patients and visitors enter our doors,” says Starks. “That difference is soon recognized as a community of individuals who express their spirituality through their work. Every day, we create and strengthen our culture in the words we say and the way we interact with patients, co-workers, and leaders. The result is a ministry of caring and blessed individuals who see their work as much more than a job, but instead, a community where kindness and compassion are the daily norm.”
