Letter to the Editor: Americans should demand president's resignation

Posted online

Dear editor,

Our democracy is in crisis after the insurrection in our nation’s Capitol. The president poses a clear and present danger to our democracy.

Any elected official who encourages insurrection should be removed from office, without regard to their political affiliation.

We cannot allow incitement of violence to become normal in our country. We must immediately restore the rule of law and maintain our tradition of free and fair elections.

I make a distinction between two of the groups that were in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6. Thousands of Trump protesters exercised their First Amendment right to assemble peaceably in support of their beliefs. Another group – hundreds of rioters – illegally and violently invaded our Capitol buildings in an insurrection which threatened the safety of many, destroyed property, disrupted the lawful electoral process outlined in our Constitution, and caused five deaths.

I call on the first group, the protesters, to help protect our country from the second, the rioters.

To that end, I urge the immediate removal of Donald J. Trump from the office of president via any legal means. He incited this insurrection. We should of course investigate voting procedures in every state. But this minute, we must prevent further harm and immediately remove power from Mr. Trump’s hands.

It is unconscionable that a man who incited an insurrection continues to appear publicly with the full pomp, circumstance and power of our presidency. This unstable and unpredictable man still holds greater power than any other person on earth.

I call on all Missouri lawmakers and officials to immediately pressure Trump to resign. I call particularly on Sen. Josh Hawley, Missouri Reps. [Billy] Long, [Blaine] Luetkemeyer, [Sam] Graves, [Jason] Smith and [Vicky] Hartzler, as well as Sen. [Roy] Blunt and Gov. Mike Parson.

Preserving our system of government is not a red team or blue team issue. The best way to avoid a costly and futile political impeachment effort is for Americans everywhere to demand the president’s resignation.

We face daunting challenges, but we will prevail.

I believe that by working together, Americans of every party can stop the pandemic, rebuild our broken economy, and meet the urgent needs of our people, our businesses and our planet.
