Mountain Movement expands to Rountree

One bike shop has replaced another this week in the Rountree neighborhood.

Mountain Movement LLC, which opened in 2020 at 5360 S. Campbell Ave., Ste. D, has added a second shop at 615 S. Pickwick Ave. after owner Max Penny purchased Queen City Cycles. The new location opened Monday, he said.

Penny said opening a second shop was a long-term goal of his, but that timeline moved up considerably when Queen City Cycles owner Miles Hamilton reached out in May. Hamilton expressed interest in selling his 18-year-old business, including all its inventory.

“That was super shocking, but I have always been a fan of Queen City and been a fan of their stuff, so it was a really cool opportunity,” Penny said, adding Hamilton told him he desired to exit and spend more time with his family.

Penny declined to disclose the purchase price for the business, startup costs or lease terms for the 3,000-square-foot shop.

Hamilton’s call came at a very busy time, Penny said. Penny was just about to launch Howler Bike Park, a 200-acre attraction roughly 30 miles south of Springfield in Walnut Shade. The bike park, which Penny owns with his parents, John and Jennifer Penny, opened May 20, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

“The timing was scary,” Penny said, noting he took a month before deciding to buy Queen City Cycles. “God put it in my life for a reason, so I was going to go ahead and say I’d figure it out. Rountree is bustling with people, and they love bikes.”

Queen City Cycles originally opened downtown on Walnut Street but moved to Rountree in 2016, according to SBJ archives.

With the opening of the new store, Penny said Mountain Movement’s Campbell Avenue shop will focus just on carrying mountain bikes. However, both shops will service any brand of bike, he added.

Along with parts, accessories and apparel for different ride disciplines, he said the Pickwick shop carries a large selection of bikes, including brands such as Kona, Transition, Pivot and Forbidden.

Penny said the second shop addition includes a new logo for Mountain Movement. However, he said he’s awaiting some temporary signage before a new permanent sign can be installed.
