MSU, SPS break ground on $6.7M magnet school

Posted online

Missouri State University and Springfield Public Schools ceremonially broke ground yesterday on the joint $6.7 million agricultural magnet school project.

Snyder Construction Group recently was selected as general contractor for the 15,100-square-foot building at MSU's William H. Darr Agricultural Center along Kansas Expressway. The school for up to 150 fourth through sixth graders is slated for completion in spring 2022, according to a news release.

"We believe this academy will help students better understand the important role agriculture plays in Missouri and challenge them to explore ways they can be active participants in that heritage," SPS Superintendent John Jungmann said in the release.

The project is funded by southwest Missouri businessperson Bill Darr and the Darr Family Foundation. Darr last year sold American Dehydrated Foods and International Dehydrated Foods for $900 million to Germany-based Symrise AG.

The building would be owned by MSU and used by SPS as an agricultural magnet school. Arkifex Studios LLC is the project architect.
