Russia has sentenced WNBA star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison for bringing cannabis-infused vape cartridges into Russia.
Cannabis is illegal in Russia for any purpose.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist was arrested in mid-February after she arrived in Russia for off-season ball playing. Her sentencing could pave the way for a U.S.-Russia prisoner swap that would free Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout to secure Griner’s release and that of a former U.S. Marine.
