Leaders from the Alexandria, Virginia, headquarters of The Salvation Army were in town this morning to present a $1 million donation to Convoy of Hope’s humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine.
The funds are earmarked to purchase food for displaced Ukrainians and assist the logistics of transporting the goods from other Eastern European countries into Ukraine, which Russia invaded in February, according to a news release.
“This partnership between The Salvation Army world service office and Convoy of Hope means that more than $800,000 in food is making its way to the region quickly and efficiently to help those most impacted by this crisis,” Salvation Army Commissioner Kenneth Hodder said in the release. “More than 180,000 people will be provided with meals, and The Salvation Army is beyond grateful to Convoy of Hope for joining with us in this service.”
A memorandum of understanding between the two organizations was signed this morning, and aid bound for Ukraine was loaded into Convoy of Hope tractor-trailers.
Convoy of Hope has committed to provide 50 million meals to Ukrainians impacted by the invasion, according to the release.
“The Salvation Army has such an incredible history of meeting the needs of people,” Convoy of Hope President Hal Donaldson said in the release. “This generous donation will continue to do that, affecting the lives of Ukrainians in a powerful way and helping Convoy of Hope continue its long-term response to this conflict.”
Convoy of Hope quickly responded to the invasion of Ukraine by setting up in Poland, Moldova and other border countries, according to past reporting.
