SARS-CoV-2 observed in American deer

SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19, has been observed in American white-tailed deer.

Pennsylvania State University veterinarians released a report that found infections in at least 30% of deer tested across Iowa during 2020.

According to NPR, the findings mean the virus could reside within the animals indefinitely and spread back to humans periodically.
