South Korean e-commerce giant faces accusations of worker exploitation

Workers at Coupang, South Korea’s leading e-commerce firm, are beginning to organize to demand better conditions, including air conditioning in all workspaces and a guaranteed 20 minutes of break time for every two hours of work.

Coupang, South Korea’s rival to Amazon, faces accusations of hot and strenuous working conditions that have killed three of its 60,000 workers.

The company remains a source of attractive jobs to South Koreans, particularly those without academic credentials that would enable them to work white-collar jobs. Workers earn up to 3.42 million won ($2,652) per month in a nation with a minimum wage of 9,160 won ($7.03) per hour.
