Trump administration to ban TikTok, WeChat

The Trump administration appears to be moving forward on threats to ban the use of Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat in the United States.

The Commerce Department announced this morning that U.S. business transactions with WeChat would be prohibited starting Sept. 20, followed by TikTok on Nov. 12.

“At the president’s direction, we have taken significant action to combat China’s malicious collection of American citizens’ personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based norms and aggressive enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations," Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement.

President Donald Trump previously gave TikTok a deadline to sell its U.S. assets or face a ban. Oracle was named as TikTok's "trusted technology partner" after pursuing a purchase of the assets. The Commerce Department statement did not mention Oracle.
