Water battery could stabilize European power grid

Posted online

A giant water battery located under the Swiss Alps could be a game-changer for renewable energy.

Named Nant de Drance, the water battery is a pumped storage hydropower plant that provides energy storage capacity equivalent to 400,000 electric car batteries.

The plant has reversible turbines that allow it to go from storing energy to providing electricity at the flip of a switch. It took 14 years to complete and includes more than 10 miles of subterranean tunnels where six turbines are stored nearly 2,000 feet underground.

The $2 billion project could help to stabilize Europe’s electricity grid as the continent moves toward renewable energy.
