Why is there such an uptick in cybercrime?

Posted online

Cybercrime has grown significantly more complex in the past few years. In the past, high-level, multi-stage attacks only came from extremely sophisticated hackers. Not so anymore. The top criminals realized they could boost their paydays and reduce their own risk by renting out their tools to other cybercriminals.

One of the interesting aspects of Ryuk ransomware and other similar attacks is that they’re sophisticated yet can be used by people without sophisticated hacking and coding abilities. The developers of Ryuk and other similar attacks often do a lot of the serious heavy lifting, then sell access to the malware for a cut of the eventual profits. This lets the malware developers make money and reduce their risk of detection in the process.

This also means people without the means to create their own sophisticated attacks now have access to more powerful cyberweapons. In a way, the developers act as arms dealers, offering powerful malware or ransomware to a wider cybercriminal community. In short, more people can attack with heavy artillery than would have otherwise.

This is why it is now more important than ever for every company to work with a reputable IT managed services company that has expertise in the field of cybersecurity. It does take some money to implement a good cybersecurity policy and keep it up to date, but the cost pales in comparison to what could happen if your company gets hacked. I like to tell our clients that paying for cybersecurity and data backup is just like having car insurance, you feel like most of the time you are paying for something you never use, but if you ever have to use it you thank your lucky stars that you have it!

Meet the Expert

Chris Kays founded F1 Computing Solutions, LLC, in July 2005. Having spent many years in the IT field and knowing just how difficult and frustrating it could be to find support in a timely manner, Chris decided his IT company would focus on high-quality, timely customer service.

Chris was honorably discharged as a disabled veteran after four years of service in the United States Air Force. Following that service, Chris became a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Springfield. After 15 years working his way up through the ranks into management while simultaneously putting himself through college at MSU, earning a bachelor’s degree in business, Chris decided to start F1 Computing Solutions. During Chris’s time at the Postal Service, he frequently put his computer and programming skills to use. He even cut the manager’s workload in half with a program he created; a program that was then implemented at post offices nationwide.

Chris is immensely proud of his many accomplishments throughout his life. He is and always will be a proud American and is even more proud to be from Springfield, Missouri. Chris is honored to be able to continue with a thriving business supported by the very community to which he has always belonged.
