Winning Kentucky Derby horse fails drug test

Posted online

Medina Spirit, the winning horse at the Kentucky Derby earlier this month, failed a post-race drug test.

The horse tested positive for elevated levels of betamethasone, an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid. It's allowed in horse racing to a certain degree, but Medina Spirit had more than double the legal threshold in Kentucky racing.

Churchill Downs on Sunday announced the suspension of trainer Bob Baffert over the failed drug test.

Medina Spirit could be stripped of the Kentucky Derby crown if an appeal is unsuccessful.
