MJ Shaar, a wellness and motivational speaker and author of “Smarts and Stamina: The Busy Person’s Guide to Optimal Health and Performance,” has an exercise she uses at speaking engagements. She shows the audience a collage and asks them to remember items of a certain color, then asks how many items of another color were present. “The purpose of this exercise is to show that it really doesn’t matter what’s in your environment, what matters is what you pay attention to,” says Shaar. “So, are you looking at what’s wrong and how to fix it, or are you looking for what’s right and how you can build from there?”
