How open is the communication in your workplace? Nicole Piper, Director of The One Stop for Early Childhood, says one of the most important things is to make your employees feel they are safe, secure and in a non-judgmental environment. “When they feel that way, then they’re able to share that with the customers that are walking through your front door,” says Piper. - So Nicole today as we're talking about business, I really want to talk about the importance of open communication in a workplace and how that can really affect relationships.

- Okay. Well, I think open communication is important. I think it's important to the employee. One of the things that we focus on at the One Stop is something called conscious discipline. And conscious discipline focuses on that self regulation first, that you're looking at yourself first. And you're centering yourself before you are able to think about the other person's point of view.

- Right, absolutely. And so, the importance of that is, if I can't center myself first, then the odds are I'm not listening to a word that you have to say to me.

- Right.

- And so I really have to focus in on making sure that I'm consciously making an effort to be involved in this conversation and seeing someone else's point of view. Is that fair to say?

- That is very fair to say. And one of the things that we focus on with conscious discipline is we focus on a STAR breathing technique. And that stands for: Stop. Take a deep breath. And relax. And that again, it just gives us the opportunity to center ourselves.

- Right.

- And then be able to listen to what the other person is saying. It puts us in that executive state of our brain that lets us think about other people's points of view.

- Right, absolutely. And so, as a business how would you suggest that they take advantage of a situation like conscious discipline and giving their office that open environment?

- There's a lot of layers to conscious discipline. But one of the most important things that I think we should focus in on, is again making that person, that employee feel that safe and secure. Feeling that they're in a non-judgemental environment. That they are free to voice their opinion, and to share their ideas. Because when they feel that way then they're able to share that with the customers that are walking through your front door.

- Absolutely. Well thank you so much Nicole.

- Thank you.
