Crossland Construction Opens Springfield Office

Columbus, Kansas based Crossland Construction has been building commercial structures in the Springfield area for 40 years but the company hasn’t had a physical presence, by way of an office in town, until now.

Crossland Construction has been involved in numerous projects in Springfield throughout its 40 years. Crossland built Springfield’s first Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, three more after that, and the Wal-Mart Supercenter on West Sunshine. The company also built the Republic pool, the O’Reilly Automotive home office, and the Lift Truck Center Inc. dealership.

On October 12, Crossland opened its first office in Springfield. “We only had a card table in here for a while,” says Springfield division manager, Lance Garrett. “It’s really nice to have a fully furnished and completely functional office.”

Although Crossland Construction has long had a presence in Springfield, having a physical base of operations in town is a welcome change. Garrett has lived and raised his family in Springfield for over 10 years and has spent the last 5 working with Crossland. “Springfield’s home,” he says. “Now that we have a Springfield office we can focus on being dedicated and strategic with Springfield. Actually having a presence here means a lot.”

Crossland Construction began in the Columbus, Kansas garage of founder Ivan Crossland in 1977. Five of his children still run the company today. The company has grown substantially over the years and last year brought in over $900 million. “It’s nice to know you have a billion dollar company behind you,” says Garrett.

The company also has a strong summer internship program and employs 150 interns every summer from regional colleges including Missouri State, Oklahoma State, Pittsburg State, and University of Arkansas. Many of the interns get job offers from Crossland after graduation. The Springfield location’s current intern will stay on at the company after graduation.

Garrett says it’s important to the company to try to keep the college grads in order to benefit not just the company, but also the community. “We educate them and grow them and we don’t want to see them leave,” he says. “And it’s good for the town to keep the young people here.”

Crossland Construction’s Springfield office is the ninth office for the company.
