Federal Protection Celebrates 50 Years of Growth and Service with 294 Employees

Federal Protection, Inc.® was founded in 1969 by Mel Hancock, author of the 1980 Missouri Tax and Spending Limitation Amendment, now known as the Hancock Amendment. Federal Protection first secured banks and credit unions and then quickly branched into commercial and residential security systems. The warehouse and film darkroom were housed in a converted milk barn on the Hancock family farm in Republic. In 1980 Mel’s son Kim took on the day to day operations after graduating from Missouri State University.

“Our true employer is our customer,” says President/CEO Kim Hancock. “We are a real service organization. The last 50 years couldn’t have happened without their faith and trust in us.”

The client base continued to grow, and Federal Protection grew with them, adapting to take care of all security needs. Federal Protection designed one of the first card access control systems in 1983, which is still a popular high-tech management tool today. In the 90s, Federal Construction, Inc.®, was added to provide full turnkey design and construction management, integrating security and life safety while utilizing the latest technology.

Business was booming when Federal Protection moved to a 58,000 square foot facility with 60 employees near the airport in 2004. The company has continued to acquire adjacent buildings and properties as it has exponentially grown throughout the years. The campus is now 83,000 sq. ft. A large amount of that growth is due to 15 acquisitions brought into the mix. In 1997 Federal Protection added servicing and selling ATMs to its offerings and is now the largest security company of its type in the central USA. In 2019, NCR Global named Federal Protection the eighth largest dealer out of 500 worldwide.

Kim Hancock explains the growth wouldn’t have been possible without a key element that they call “The Federal Difference.” “I’ve seen this company grow from three employees to 294. It’s all evolved around the people,” he says. “Having great people in the right positions is really what’s made our company. Our entire group has an attitude of serving.”

“We call ourselves ‘TeamFederal’,” says Jenny (Hancock) Schulze, marketing and senior leadership at Federal Protection. “Together we all work to uphold our mission of ‘Under Promise & Over Perform’.”

Hancock emphasizes the company’s commitment to ensuring absolute security for all customers. “It makes a difference to have the telephones answered by a real person when you need to call your security provider,” he says. “When you contact Federal Protection, you will talk to a live person speaking the English language 24/7, 365 days a year.”

Vice President of Operations Matt Harrison, who has been with the company for 22 years, sums it up like this, “Fifty years of an attitude of serving people has led to 50 years of a culture of success.”
