Posted online

The Alliance of Area Business Publishers presented Springfield Business Journal with three awards for coverage last year.

The AABP 2021 Editorial Excellence Awards ceremony was livestreamed yesterday, when SBJ staff learned the publication brought in two first-place awards and a silver honor in its category of medium-sized tabloids. The AABP represents roughly 65 North American publications with a combined circulation of more than 1.8 million readers.

SBJ won gold awards for its No Ceiling podcast and for best overall design.

The No Ceiling podcast features SBJ Executive Editor Christine Temple interviewing local women on their careers and challenges. The first season debuted in October 2020, and episodes of the second season currently are releasing on a weekly basis.

"This entry is a standout, pure and simple. Innovative branding boldly announces the important mission behind the podcast," the AABP judges' comments read. "An engaging host, creative use of audio, excellent guests and thoughtful storytelling all come together to make it a clear winner."

In the medium tabloids category, SBJ scored first place for its design, with judges noting the publication "offers an active, aggressive inside design and is bright and inviting." SBJ designers Heather Mosley and Amanda Miller were recognized for designs such as SBJ's 2020 Economic Growth Survey editions.

In best bylined commentary, SBJ's Temple took home a second-place silver award for her "Truth Be Told" opinion pieces. Among them is the March 2020 column, "Still chipping away at highest, hardest glass ceiling."

"The author combines a point of view with solid reporting and delivers it in a nicely written package," the judges' comments read.

The Editorial Excellence Awards went to more than 30 publications in 26 categories.

The AABP ceremony included a best explanatory journalism gold award for Springfield-based Biz 417 for its "What We Can Be" coverage on working in southwest Missouri as a Black person. Biz 417 was honored in the small publication category.
