U.S. public health officials have declared monkeypox a public health emergency, freeing up government resources to help contain the spread of the virus.
As of Aug. 3, 6,600 cases had been confirmed nationally. Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, chills and rashes, but it is rarely fatal. The illness usually lasts two to four weeks. It is spread for skin-to-skin contact and shared bedding or clothing.
The Biden administration has faced criticism for failing to make vaccines available for the disease.
