2024 40 Under 40: Tom Masterson

Springfield Public Schools

Posted online

In his dozen years of work at Springfield Public Schools, Tom Masterson has steadily ascended the leadership ladder in the district.

The newest role for Masterson is executive director of elementary schools, a position for which he provides support for 10 principals in leadership of their campuses. He says some key focuses for students are increased attendance, improved behavior and ever-increasing academic performance.

After starting as a teacher at SPS in 2012, he became an assistant principal at age 27, principal at 29 and director of elementary schools at 33 before his latest promotion last year at the age of 34.

At SPS, some of Masterson’s volunteer work includes the district’s annual Back to School Bash, which connects families to needed resources. Off campus, he serves as vice chair of the Mayor’s Commission for Children, an appointed group that meets monthly to stay updated and involved in community issues tied to the well-being of kids.
