Management is a functional role and leadership is how you do it. There are four leadership functions that I think separate the manager from the leader.
Be Transparent
People want to know what is going on, and we shouldn’t underestimate the ability of the team to sense when there is change brewing. I believe in being transparent whenever possible. Being honest allows the team to process, adjust, and feel like part of the plan.
Stay in the Know
It is important to stay in the know. Understand what your team does every day, and don’t get so far out of touch that you wouldn’t be able to do it yourself.
Respect comes from knowledge, hard work and strong relationships. It is very hard to build those things from afar and without a realistic view of what they are going through daily.
Be a Part of the Solution
I believe in being hands on. I like to understand the details, so that if there is a problem I can be a part of the solution. Leadership is difficult and requires constant sacrifice.
Build Your Team
Finally, teamwork is very important to me. I take a genuine interest in the careers of those who work with and for me, and I want to see them succeed.
The most important asset we have in any organization is the people that make it successful and deliver on the promise to our clients every day. Building good solid relationships with the team makes all the difference for achieving excellent results for customers, employees and the organization.
