Defying the Numbers

Women still struggle to break through the glass ceiling in the workplace—and this includes the legal profession.

There’s a lack of female leadership in law, so I’ve made it my mission to defy the numbers, trailblazing as MVP Law’s first female board member since the firm’s founding in 1901 and opening the door for other women.

As managing partner of our Springfield office and Senior Vice President of People and Performance, I’ve faced leadership challenges and learned how to be an effective leader.

Be approachable. Be someone who makes people feel comfortable coming forward with questions, problems or concerns. In turn, you’ll garner respect and be seen as someone who is responsive to your team’s needs.

Understand value. Make your team feel appreciated for the work they do, especially when it’s particularly busy or stressful. Seeing the bigger picture will help your team stay focused and inspired.

Be flexible in your growth within your organization. Sometimes success isn’t a straight line, and it’s important to keep an open mind to opportunity.
